Advancing Nuclear Engineering Through Philanthropy

Private support plays a vital role in moving the Department of Nuclear Engineering forward at NC State. Your investment strengthens our department’s ability to recruit exceptional students and faculty, fuel groundbreaking research, and provide the resources needed to drive innovation in nuclear science and engineering. Your generosity helps us continue to think and do at the highest level.

There are many ways for you to support the Nuclear Engineering Department. We are happy to discuss any of the funding priorities and giving options in more detail and invite you to contact Maggie Musick at maggiemusick@ncsu.edu, or via phone at 703.431.6821 with your question.

Current Funding Opportunities

The Nuclear Engineering Enhancement Fund supports all that it takes to run an excellent department that also provides a welcoming environment for our students and faculty.

  • Supporting student social events fosters community.
  • Hosting lectures brings new voices to our department — and provides an opportunity to elevate our research and faculty.
  • Investing in student recruiting events has led to an increase in applications and a stronger student base, which are critical to our growth

The J. Michael Doster Fund for Undergraduate Excellence in Nuclear Engineering honors Dr. Mike Doster’s enduring impact on the department — especially his deep commitment to creating a strong, hands-on undergraduate experience. Established by Nuclear Engineering alumni in recognition of his retirement in 2022, this fund supports the many elements that enrich and strengthen the undergraduate program.

  • Supporting undergraduate research empowers students to explore real-world challenges and deepen their academic experience.
  • Enhancing student-focused programming builds community and strengthens engagement within the department.
  • Investing in high-impact learning opportunities ensures that students are well-prepared for future careers and leadership in the field.

Endowed professorships and faculty awards help recruit, retain and reward top talent.

  • Endowed positions and awards for early career faculty are powerful retention tools for faculty members who are regularly recruited by other universities.
  • Giving our faculty members the tools they need to succeed is a force multiplier: successful faculty bring in new research opportunities and attract top graduate students.

Gifts toward student support, including scholarships and fellowships, help us stand out to prospective students — and ensure they can make the most out of their time at NC State.

  • Fellowships and scholarships are vital to ensuring we can compete for excellent students and make this opportunity affordable to them.
  • Support for student experiences — including travel to conferences, networking events and research opportunities abroad — opens up new possibilities and connections for future nuclear engineers.

Philanthropic support of our equipment fund ensures our students and faculty have what they need for their learning and research.

  • Nuclear engineering requires specific and expensive equipment, such as radiation detection equipment and thermal hydraulic loops.
  • When our faculty and students have the latest and most state-of-the-art equipment, they are able to take their research further and explore novel research areas.
