Congratulations to Dr. Mohamed Bourham, Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor of Nuclear Engineering, Director of the College of Engineering Master of Engineering Program & Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Bourham has been bestowed with the 2020 Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence. This medal is the the university’s highest faculty award, recognizing faculty members whose careers demonstrate excellence in achievement and sustained impact in research, teaching, service, or extension and engagement. It is the highest honor awarded by NC State and the university’s Board of Trustees.
Dr. Bourham earned his BSc, MSc, and PhD in Electrical Engineering from universities in Alexandria and Ain Shams Cairo, Egypt. He joined NC State’s Department of Nuclear Engineering in 1987 and has taught a undergraduate and a varied number of undergraduate and graduate courses. He has secured several educational awards from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in support of students and fundamental research. He has mentored numerous students, faculty, and staff members. He holds a passion for outreach and engagement and has served as interim department head. His research work includes plasma-matter interaction, plasma propulsion and thrusters, fusion engineering, plasma surface modification, x-ray sources for medical and screening imaging, nuclear and mixed waste disposal, dry casks, and high-level waste packaging studies.
The award is named in honor of Alexander Quarles Holladay, NC State’s first professor of history and its first president. Honorees receive an engraved medal and framed certificate. The Talley Technology Tower will glow red the evening of May 5 in honor of awardees. A formal Celebration of Faculty Excellence is forthcoming.
