Happy birthday to the American Nuclear Society! 70 years today, October 11, 1954, the professional society was formed, and we wish them many more years of leadership in the field. Their current president, Lisa Marshall, has a connection to NC State University. She’s the Assistant Extension Professor & Director of Outreach, Retention & Engagement in the Department of Nuclear Engineering.
Proclaiming itself the “first professional society in [the] atomic field,” ANS was founded October 11, 1954, in Washington, D.C., at a gathering of more than 20 prominent scientists and engineers held in the wood-paneled Reading Room (now the Members’ Room) of the National Academy of Sciences Building, situated along the National Mall.
“This is the world’s first professional society of scientists and engineers representative of all scientific disciplines engaged in research, development, and application of nuclear technology,” ANS announced of its birth in a press release that evening. “A principal purpose of the group is to foster the integration and advancement of nuclear science and technology through the interchange of information and ideas in all fields of research utilizing nuclear techniques.”
