Three US Department of Energy fellowships awarded to NC State Nuclear Engineering students

Congratulations are in order to three  NC State Nuclear Engineering graduate students. They are the recipients of the U.S. Department of Energy University Nuclear Leadership Program (UNLP) fellowships, valued at $169,000 each, in support of nuclear science and engineering educational pursuits.

  • Nicholas Poole, a doctoral student and member of Dr. Ayman Hawari’s Low Energy Interaction Physics group. He is researching advanced reactor diagnostics through the use of PULSTAR reactor.
  • Rylan Paye, a doctoral student studying computational methods/computational physics in nuclear engineering. He is a member of Dr. Dmitriy Anistratov’s research group.
  • Matthew Schweitzer, a doctoral student and member of Dr. Ayman Hawari’s research group. His interests lie in radiation effects on materials, advanced reactors, and molten salts.

More than $5 million in scholarships and fellowships are provided through the Office of Nuclear Energy’s (NE) University Nuclear Leadership Program (UNLP) and include 61 undergraduate scholarships and 28 graduate fellowships for students at 32 colleges and universities in 23 states.

UNLP was previously known as the Integrated University Program (IUP). Since 2009, the program has awarded more than 900 scholarships and fellowships totaling approximately $55 million. Awards are scheduled to be finalized by July 31, 2022.
