NC State Nuclear Engineering alumnus elected president of the Canadian Nuclear Society

Congratulations to Dr. Doddy Kastanya, P.Eng., elected president of the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS). His term began at the 2023 Annual Conference in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Dr. Kastanya is currently a Technical Expert in the Advanced Reactor Integration and Analysis section at Kinectrics in Toronto, Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Nuclear Engineering (MNE), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nuclear Engineering, all from NC State University.

Kastanya has over 20 years of experience in the nuclear industry. His areas of expertise include nuclear fuel management, computational reactor physics, safety analysis, and mathematical optimization for solving nuclear engineering related problems. He has experience in performing analyses for pressurized and boiling water reactors as well as high temperature gas-cooled reactors, with much of his work on the Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) reactor design. He started his career at the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited as a reactor physics analyst where he played a leading role for designing and optimizing the detector layout for Regional Overpower Protection systems of the ACR-1000 and the Enhanced CANDU 600 MW reactor designs. Over the years, he has led various reactor physics and safety analysis projects for operating CANDU reactors around the globe.

His professional activities include Co-Chair of the Finance Committee, Co-Chair of the Education and Communication Committee, and membership on scholarship, contract, membership, and publication committees of the CNS. He served as a technical reviewer for several international nuclear engineering journals and nuclear conferences. Dr. Kastanya serves as a member of the editorial board of the Progress in Nuclear Energy (since 2015), the Annals of Nuclear Energy (since 2020), and the Science and Technology of Nuclear Installations (since 2022). He is also a professional engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada.
