Congratulations to Ghada Shkoukani, winner of the best student paper award from the American Nuclear Society Radiation Protection & Safety Division (ANS RPSD). Miss Shkoukani’s paper was entitled “Effect of Irradiation and Corrosion on Gamma Attenuation Behavior of 316 and 304 Stainless Steel” and it investigates the shielding properties for bare and coated irradiated and corroded stain steel samples.
Ghada had this to say about the award –
It is an extreme honor to receive such a recognition from the American Nuclear Society. It has given me the push needed to continue the hard work and further advance my research on topics that I am passionate about.
Shkoukani’s dissertation committee comprises of Drs. Mohamed Bourham and Jacob Eapen as co-chairs and Drs. Murty, Yang and Jiang. Ghada started her doctoral degree in the fall 2018 and is expected to graduate in December 2021. She completed her undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, participating in a NC State nuclear engineering summer internship in 2017.
The Radiation Protection and Shielding Division of the American Nuclear Society is concerned with radiation protection and shielding aspects of nuclear science and technology — including interaction of nuclear radiation with materials and biological systems, instruments, and techniques for the measurement of nuclear radiation fields, and radiation shield design and evaluation.
