Students presented their senior design projects this Wednesday to fellow students, faculty and staff, industry sponsors, the Nuclear Engineering Advisory Council (NEDAC) and the NEDAC Undergraduate Committee.
There were 7 senior design projects co-sponsored by Westinghouse, Duke Energy, Idaho National Laboratory, Southern Company and GE-Hitachi. At NC State, nuclear engineering senior design is a year-long course that addresses an industry or laboratory research question. Industrial and faculty advisers guide students through the engineering design process.
Following senior design presentations were poster displays and discussions by our graduate students, CNEC graduate fellows and CASL undergraduate research students. It was an opportunity for faculty, staff, industry partners, the NEDAC council and committee members and fellow students to enter into discussion about nuclear engineering research.
And to end the day’s activities there was a recognition dinner for student scholarship and fellowship recipients, faculty research awards and staff honors. For example, NC State’s nuclear engineering students hold scholarships and fellowships from the US Department of Energy Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) and the American Nuclear Society (ANS) to alumni and industry (Duke Energy).
Faculty were acknowledged for their work in a wide array of research including stress-corrosion cracking testing in light water reactor environments, dose deposition profiles in untreated brick material and computational tools to advance a more sustainable cycle for agricultural, water, and energy resources.
Faculty and staff were acknowledged for their service – global engagement award, international service award, induction as fellow of the National Academy of Engineering , election as chair of the OECD NEA Working Party on Scientific Issues of Reactor Systems as well as induction as the NC State Distinguished Alumnus and Nuclear Engineering Hall of Fame inductees.
Congratulations to our students, faculty and staff for a year of study, research and service.
