NC State Nuclear Engineering Students Win at 2016 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Student Conference

Awards and honorable mentions were received at the 2016 ANS Student Conference this weekend in Madison, Wisconsin.

Best undergraduate paper in the Materials Science & Technology track, presented by Brandon Chisholm and Aaron Riddle – “Simulations of a SIC-Based Accident Tolerant Fuel System”. Other team members include Travis Willis, Kelsey Reamer, Ryan Taylor, Gabe DeCaro, Fahad Al Suwaidi, Jeremy Singleton (SC State student) & Gerald Sheppard (SC State student). Faculty mentor, Dr. Jacob Eapen.

Honorable mentions were given to Nina Colby Sorrell and Joseph Cambareri for their respective presentations “Low-Enriched Uranium Nuclear Thermal Rocket (NTR) Core Design for Manned Mars Mission” and “Thermal Hydraulic Design of a Nuclear Thermal Rocket (NTR). They presented in the Aerospace Nuclear Science & Technology track. Senior design project members include Joseph Cope (group lead), Colby Sorrell (neutronics lead), Cole Manring, Jacquelyn Holshouser, Casey Stocking, Mason Mullmann, Kevin Horback (SC State team members) and Jessica Rhodes (SC State team members). Faculty mentor, Dr. J. Michael Doster.

All senior design teams who presented & did a spectular job at the conference include,
Kristie Soliman & Joseph Orellana for “The Safety Design of a Submerged Nuclear Power Plant”. Other team members include Caroline Keller, Becca Gibson, Lucas McLamb, Silver Chenm Mohamed Alashar and Bianca Cruz (SC State student). Faculty mentor, Dr. Nam Dinh.

Shrey Satpathy & Jim Wang for “Nitradation of Zircaloy Fuel Clad Using an Atmospheric Plasma Source”. Other team members include Blaine Taylor, Landon Hall, Andrew Key, Jasmin Alsaied, Carl Smith, Danavonne Bryant (SC State student), Bailen JeanJacques (SC State student). Faculty mentor, Dr. Steven Shannon.
