Abstract

Los Alamos National Laboratory maintains a large and robust high-performance simulation capability for radiation transport physics. Within the radiation transport project, four distinct software packages are maintained for the purpose of performing large scale calculations of neutron and photon transport processes in high-performance computing environments. In this talk, the capabilities provided by the transport project will be detailed along with ongoing efforts in research and development. The primary focus will be placed on the deterministic thermal radiation transport capability provided via the Capsaicin project. Thermal radiation transport is integral to phenomena occurring in the high energy density regime, and the Capsaicin project provides the ability to simulate these physics as a component within complex, large scale multiphysics simulations. These physics are highly nonlinear, with multi-scale behavior and high-dimensionality, creating a challenging environment for the development of a robust and efficient package.

Biography

Joseph Coale is a staff scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory working in the computational methods and physics group. He is a developer on the Capsaicin project for deterministic thermal radiation transport. Joseph received a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2018, 2019 and 2022 respectively. His dissertation focused on dimensionality reduction techniques for thermal radiative transfer simulations. Over the course of his academic and professional careers so far, Joseph has worked directly in conjunction with four U.S. national laboratories, one government agency, and three universities.
