Alexandra Akins

Research

Alexandra’s research examines artificial intelligence and machine learning applications to anomaly detection in nuclear engineering, with the ultimate goal of optimizing advanced reactor designs. Alexandra has already worked extensively with Long Short Term Memory Autoencoders for implementation in sodium-cooled fast reactors. Alexandra initially became interested in her major due to nuclear power’s ability to provide reliable carbon-free energy all over the world. Alexandra was selected to be a National Science Foundation fellow in 2023. She has been a part of Dr. Xu Wu’s research group since October of 2020. She is a two time recipient of the Department of Energy’s University Nuclear Leadership Program Scholarship and has received the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Nuclear Education Program Scholarship.
